Fourth Sunday of Lent. Mar. 14, 2010. Fr. Anthony Brankin

Gospel: Luke 15: 1 – 3, 11 – 32. The Prodigal Son

Summary: The media are so involved in our lives — they tell us what to think and believe. They teach us that there is no God, and thus no sin, and therefore no forgiveness. Yet the media is made up of seriously flawed people. The media is not looking for moral justice, or redemption of the sinner. The day may come when we need forgiveness, and we find ourselves neither asking for it, nor accepting it.

Summary: God says, “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow.” By God’s grace, big sinners can become friends of God. St. Paul says, “Work out your own salvation in fear and trembling.” No one can say “I will go to heaven – I’m sure about it.” We will be saved in hope. Every year in Lent there is a new opportunity to change, to repent. The Catholic Church seems to be the only voice that speaks against many things that this world accepts so easily. Let us pray that we may transform our hearts, believe in God’s hope, and to go into the world to preach this Gospel with courage.

Summary: The whole universe makes sense only as it is a reflection of the cross of Christ. Why should God care for any of us more than we are concerned for ants? He does it out of pure love. He is happy to give us existence. He loves us because we share His nature — because we are like Him. He has a stake in us. He has a stake in our life and well being. He wants us to be happy, whole and holy. He loves us because He sees himself in us. He loves us not because of what we do, but for what we are – sharers of his very existence.
